- Distribution Files
- ==================
-
- The distribution of this program should contain the following
- files:
-
- READ.ME What you are reading.
- WAR.EXE The executable program.
- WAR.HTX Data file for the program.
- WAR.MTX " " " " "
- WAR.STX " " " " "
-

- Machine Requirements
- ====================
-
- This program will run on any CPU type from an 8088 on up (since
- it uses a fair bit of CPU, a faster machine certainly helps). It
- DOES require a Microsoft compatible mouse and at least an EGA
- level monitor. The program makes extensive use of colours to
- impart information during the game and is probably unplayable on
- a grey-scale monitor.
-
-
- Installation
- ============
-
- Simply copy the four WAR.xxx files to the disk or directory in
- which you wish to keep Naval Warfare. The 3 data files MUST be in
- the same directory as the EXE file.
-
- e.g. If you keep games in the \GAMES directory on the C: drive,
- and the distribution disk is in the A: drive, then issue the
- command:
-
- COPY A:WAR.* C:\GAMES
-
- The program accepts two optional switches:
-
- /M - Suppresses the opening tune (it does get boring after a
- while)
-
- /Q - Suppresses all sounds (including the opening tune) to allow
- the program to run silently.
-
- i.e. WAR /Q would be completely silent.

- Instructions
- ============
-
- The game is totally mouse oriented and makes NO use of the
- keyboard whatsoever. If no mouse is detected, the game will
- terminate immediately.
-
- How to Play
- ===========
-
- When you start the game you will be asked if you wish to browse
- the Help information. Use the mouse to select 'Y' in order to
- access the 'how to play' type of information. It is NOT in the
- READ.ME file.
-
- History
- =======
-
- This game, like Battleships, is based on a paper-and-pencil game.
- I first encountered it in the back of a book of indoor games
- (cards, chess, backgammon, etc.) over 30 years ago and must admit
- to many wasted hours in school study halls in playing this game.
-
- It does not have exactly the same rules as the original game, due
- to the method of playing on the computer, but it is very close. I
- have tried to make the computer opponent as 'intelligent' as
- possible.
-
- Since this is my first effort in programming a game, I would
- appreciate any and all comments (good or bad).
